A Year in High Heels

A personal blog following the book "A Year in High Heels" by Camilla Morton

February 1st & 2nd

Well, January has finally come to an end and I have yet to give up this silly project. I suppose a month is something worth celebrating, despite several posts being days late. Technically that includes this one – the 1st has a separate entry for itself in the book. Let’s jump into February shall we?

February Postcard

This month’s postcard come from Bella Freud from Paris. I will admit freely that I have no idea who Bella Freud is. I have no idea who any of the people are that she mentions in her postcard. What I do know is that I am certain this postcard was designed to inspire envy. Because really, who wants to be anywhere else than Paris in a month as dreary as February?

La Boheme

We have a lovely block about La Boheme, Puccini, and Henri Murger. Now, I knew La Boheme was an opera, and was the basis for the movie Moulin Rouge, which I find only mildly enjoyable (Baz Luhrmann is a bit much sometimes). I also vaguely aware of Puccini and that he’s an Italian opera composer of renown, but again my references come from things like Downton Abbey and Mr. Malcom’s List. As for Henri…well, poor Henri was a French poet. And as I barely can tolerate and enjoy poetry in my own language, you can guess how much I know about Henri. I may be persuaded to give La Boheme a chance, but I don’t expect it to win my heart or sway me into thoroughly enjoying opera.

More Superstitions and Traditions

Ms. Morton sure does enjoy educating the public on a variety of religious and spiritual subjects. Here she shares with us the pagan calendar of events, the spiritual significance of Stonehenge, and the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin. That feast though is greatly overshadowed (pun intended) here in America by Groundhog Day. Again, I put no stock in the prognostications of a large rodent, but I’ll admit freely that I love the film. Bill Murray is perfection in his role as Phil Conners.
