The delay on these entries is insane. After the last batch, I realized I had quite some time before I had entries to write about. Unfortunately, those dates breezed right by me and now we’re well into March.
We begin with a brief mention of Renoir, and entreaty to bring a sketch book with us next time we go to a bar. Now, I don’t frequent bars, and I didn’t much in my 20’s either. But I have brought a sketch book to lunch before. And yes, it is pretty fun to draw the various people that one finds out an about. But you do have to be discreet. Staring at people is just a bit off putting.
Shrove Tuesday and the Invention of the Pancake?
More commonly known as Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, this is a Catholic observance before people start fasting (not so often now) or giving up things for Lent. It was like the day before you start a diet – get rid of all the temptations in the house, eat it all up so that it isn’t a problem. Honestly, a terrible idea that is prone to make one ill. But evidently a pancake/crepe was a great vessel for all the fatty sugary contents of one’s larder, and hence the birth of a breakfast staple. And while Ms. Morton’s “tips” on flipping a pancake are fun(?) most people do just fine with a spatula and taking it slow rather than trying to show off with a pan.
No Leap this Year
2026 doesn’t have an extra day in February, thank God. We begin with the Julian Calendar, and our standard 12th months. As far as I can tell, 12 months really doesn’t have any rhyme or reason. If we’re sticking with 365 days, it makes more sense to just have 13 months. I’m sure that someone somewhere would complain about 13 being unlucky, but honestly, 28 day months, 4 weeks even, would be so much easier to keep track of. I guess thanks to the Gregorian Calendar for at least tying to bring some order to this mess. Or, you know, we could just forget about regulated time and go back to moon cycles.
The Boot
I’ve got to admit, I love a good boot. I love a Victorian boot with tons of detail. I love a thigh high boot. I love a riding boot, a hiking boot, and even a bootie. Heck, I even love a Wellington Boot. I don’t have nearly enough opportunity to wear boots in my day to day life, and I honestly feel like I should remedy that.
